Patients who previously had an IVC (inferior vena cava) filter placed to prevent pulmonary embolism can benefit from retrieval once the risk of blood clots has passed. This includes individuals who are now able to take blood thinners or whose underlying condition—such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT)—has improved or resolved.
Removing the filter helps prevent long-term complications such as filter migration, vein damage, or new clot formation. Dr. Fabio Komlos evaluates each patient carefully using advanced imaging to determine if and when retrieval is safe. Even if the filter has been in place for years, many patients are still good candidates for safe, successful removal through a minimally invasive procedure.
