Before the Procedure – Dr. Fabio Komlos will review your medical history, perform imaging (usually an ultrasound), and determine if you’re a good candidate for a percutaneous AV fistula.
During the Procedure – A small catheter is inserted into a vein and artery in your arm. Using real-time imaging, Dr. Komlos creates a connection between the two vessels. The procedure is minimally invasive, typically takes less than an hour, and is done under local anesthesia with mild sedation.
After the Procedure – Most patients go home the same day. You may feel mild soreness, but recovery is quick, and there are no large incisions or stitches. The fistula will begin to mature over the next few weeks until it’s ready for dialysis.
Follow-Up – Dr. Komlos will monitor your fistula with imaging to ensure it’s functioning properly and provide guidance on how to care for it at home.
